What is Inztinct Photography and Journalism? Hi, I’m Holly Wallace – the woman behind Inztinct Photography and Journalism. I grew up in the Blue Mountains, Australia, but my love of the snow drew me over the ocean to settle in Queenstown, New Zealand, where I worked as a freelance writer and photographer for seven years specialising in lifestyle and travel features for leading NZ magazines and newspapers. I am inspired by nature, different cultures and a good adventure, which is why I recently agreed to pack up my comfortable life in idyllic Queenstown and move to the heat and buzz of the Middle East. My husband Josh and I are based in Qatar, a booming gulf country most commonly known for its outspoken TV news station Al Jazeera where Josh works as an editor. Although my heart remains in NZ’s stunning Southern Alps, I’m enjoying being back in the thick of it and experiencing life as a small fish in a big, big pond again. As a writer I’m being stimulated by exploring a new culture and understanding first hand the issues underlying the current unrest in the Middle East which is affecting the whole world. As a photographer I’m having fun capturing the spirit of the Middle East on film – creatively exploring the landscape, people and culture visually. As a traveller I’m soaking up the new challenges and personal learning that living in a foreign culture brings.
Publications -
Journalism - I have worked as a journalist since 2000 for numerous publications. I’ve written varying styles including news, features, editorial and advertising, although my strength and love is feature writing. I studied a BA of Broadcast Journalism at Charles Sturt University in Australia and majored in Documentary Film production. I graduated in 1999 with honours. Photography - My photography career began behind a video camera. I was employed briefly as a camera operator by a corporate video production house in Sydney. My first stills photography job was on the snow at Perisher Blue, Australia. I took photos of people, families, races and events - competing against 8 other photographers for commission. I moved on to working as photographer on Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, Australia. I shot honeymooners, weddings, functions, and yachting events. On arrival in Queenstown I worked briefly for Magic Memories on the snow as their head photographer managing a team of six photographers before moving onto photo journalism for local papers and publications. Since then my photos have accompanied my stories and been independently sourced by Tourism NZ for their image bank. My images are also represented by online photographic agency www.photonewzealand.com and on Flikr - www.flickr.com/photos/hollywallace.
